Pictures for Digipack

I took some pictures to experiment with for my digipack, if they are sucessful i will plan on using some or all in either my cd front cover and back cover or my magazine advertisment. I have taken some and edited and these are what they look like.
This was an adaptation on the previous one but this time i edited in Thomas Townsend on the front, as he is in the video so the auidience would recognise him, he also appeals to the specific target audience which the song is aimed at. I eddited him so he was black and white and played with the contrast untill he looked this dynamic. This was an example that was getting more to what i wanted for my final result. I googled a picture of a white brick wall, and pasted it on photoshop, i editied it so it looke washed out faded to give the picture a casual, laid back look. i then went on a website www.dafont.com and copied and pasted a url ofa font that i thought looked like the style i wanted my digipack to look. The font i chose was this, i believe it looks bold but computerised which makes the image appeal more to the target audience, it looks slightly like graffiti but more dynamic. I canged the size and width of the font and placed it when i felt looked best. Not directly in the middle to give it a more edgy look. I then copied the previous image of the film rail with the pictures of Tom and i in and pasted it on this image. i put it like this so it looks like its hanging off the page, curling over. This also makes the overall image not look to perfect.

This was an experiment i tested and in result really liked. I felt as the song is called photobooth i wanted to link a similarity in somewhere whether it be the idea of a passport photo style of a rail of film like this. I went on google and found a rail of film picture. The image originally had another couple in the frame, i went on photoshop and deleted their pictures and replaced them with my own. This was really tricky as i had to adjust the shape, the size and the measurements. I finaly did this satisfactory and added in my pictures to the blank squares in the middle whee i had previously deleted the other pictures. I then warped the entire image and shaped in to the specificstyle, i did this as i felt i would be able to do more with it, i could hang it over the page or have it going across the page. The image was allready black and white, so i just enhanced the contrast to make the final result look more dynamic. This i felt was a little better as it was in black and white which suddenly made the image seem more dingy looking which linked with the genre more/ i also zoomed in with the original picture and made the tree look more upfront, this fille the full pageso i didnt think there would be much point in adding anything else too extreme. The image is still plain bt the tree i feel looks mysterious and slightly edgy, this could be a positive thing, but i feel does make the image look slightly gothic moe than indie which isnt quite what i was looking for. To do this i simply changed the color contrast and made the whites whiter and the darks darker. This is just a simple picture of clouds. I took this and edtited only slightly to enhance the colors and the brightness to represent happy times. I thought it was simple and i could easily add a title and other information on the front without over doing the entire thing. However i did feel this didnt exactly link with the genre of the song.

Cd Front and Back Analysis

This is a front of a cd cover for the band Arctic Monkeys. They are an alternative rock band from Sheffield and were formed in 2002. This album is ‘Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not.’ It was released in January 2006 and became the UK’s fastest selling debut album, shifting over 360,000 copies in its first week and remains the fastest selling album by a band. The context of the album, the songs, the lyrics which are on the disk are known to attract young clubbers of the time, including songs such as, ‘I bet that you look good on the dancefloor’, ‘still take you home’ and ‘dancing shoes’. All of these songs suggest a lifestyle that would appeal to the younger generation, ages between 18-24. The songs talk about doing drugs before a night out, getting very drunk and causing trouble with the bouncers on a club door, and prostitutes. Knowing this you can safely say the album would appeal more to young boys and men then females as this is a stereo-typical idealistic night for young boys of today. The alum name was taking from the film, ‘Saturday night and Sunday morning’ by Albert Finney, Alex Turner the lead singer from the band chose this title for the album as he felt the film had similar themes to the songs they had produced for the album, the name links with the idea of having a mental’ weekend and then recognizing this on the Sunday morning. The film shows this, the songs they produced for the album speaks about this. The image on the cover is the band member’s friend, Chris McClure in the Korova bar in Liverpool, early hours of the morning. The band had given McClure seventy pounds to spend on a night out, and this was the outcome. The image caused lots of controversy as the NHS said it is suggesting that smoking is ok, the accusations were fought upon by the bands producer as he said, the image is not suggesting that is ok o smoke, in fact it is showing the opposite, because as you can see the man doesn’t look in good condition therefore the cigarette isn’t making him well.’ Billboards where then put up to advertise the album but without the cigarette.
The image is a close up of a man smoking, his eyes slightly squinted to show he is either drunk or blinded by the light, which is also metaphorically a song from the album. The entire image is black and white, the background been dark grey, black and the mans shirt being white. This shows the contrast between the beginning of the night when he was sober, and the end when he was completely the opposite. Also it gives a more dingy effect on the album to suggest the songs are not going to be merry. There is not a title of the album on the front page, just the artist’s name. ‘Arctic Monkeys’ is in a oblong box slightly tilted to the left, to show an edgy, not perfect look. The writing is black, the background is white to reflect the picture of the man, and the background behind him. The font looks like it has been doodled which also reflects a slightly rebellious look.

This is the back cover of the album. This also reflects the front cover, as it has the same theme and a similar mage. It is the same man from the front cover, Chris McClure, but this time he has his hea in his hands, covering his face, he still has his cigarette lit. The image shows he is either laughing and has covered his face, or he is feeling rough and drunk so he has slumped his head, i believe it is more likely to be the second reason than the first as the album is about nights out. The image is still a close up to show continuity from the front cover. The songs are listed on the left hand side in the top corner. The writing s white, which contrasts with the black background. The song titles have no punctuation, they are just written in a list underneath each other. This suggests, also, a slight rebellion. The title of the album is on both sides, the left and the right going horizontal. Then at the bottom there is the credits, the producer, director and record company, as well as the barcode.

The immaculate collection was the first greatest hit album released by Madonna in 1990 by Sire Records. The album is the best-selling compilation album ever released by a solo artist and the 13th world's best selling album of all time, with 30 million copies sold worldwide. The title of the album is a loose pun of the Immaculate Conception, the conception of the Virgin Mary without any stain of the original sin. This name follows Madonna's religious-themed songs and videos, as well as the second section of her Blond Ambition Tour, ambiented in the same way.
The front cover is of a sky blue, with a gold patterned symbol in the center. The blue represents a fresh warmth to nature/earth, which is also what her songs talk about. Gold is known to signify wealth, power and sucess. Which could link with how sucessful this album was and the idea of culture and religion also links with the color gold. The words 'the' and 'collection' are in a slightly smaller font to 'immaculuate' which really emphasises the word and meaning.

Ancillary Texts

To complete my task of constructing a music video i also have to produce two ancillary texts. I have chose to design a magazine advertisment introducing the band and there new single. I am also going to produce a digipack which is a patented style compact disk. It is important that in doing these two tasks i obtain a sense of continuity through all my work, so the same font, themes, texture and ideas will be the same all the way through my video, digipack and advertisment poster.
I am going to analys other digipacks and posters to get some ideas and to fully understand what it is i am about to produce.
A digipack contains th album disk and a dvd to add more merchandise to the packaging, to receive more money and more praise. The idea of a digipak is to advertise their product to the specific audience. I am going to look at conventions of specific music genres, associated colours, mise-en-scene and frequently used cinematography. I am going to look at target audiences and recognise what appeals to them and what they would prefer, also the representation of gender and institutional influences.
Here are some examples of completed digipaks from other artists.

Cd Cover Ideas For Front And Back And Artist Name Ideas

• A Polaroid camera around a girls neck and a rail of films and photo albums.
I think this will suggest a mysterious element. I dont want the girl to be linked with the video, just to be sat with the camera around her neck. The camera will signify photographs which will link with memories which is the main theme of the video and song. The range of different photographs in albums and on a rail will suggest a hectic fun life and the idea she has a lot of memories. The idea that she is by herself suggests lonesome. so the idea of her not loosing someone close to her so she looks at the photos to remind her of the happy times she used to have.
• A selection of different photographs of both Tom and myself, a page of me, a page of Tom and a page of either both of us, or the camera itself
This will just link with the video and i would use images from the video to put on the cd and magazine advertisment so the viewer can link them with the video.
• A empty skull full of photographs
this is unusual and different, this would show a slightly more ery effect to the whole idea. the empty skull would represent a head, and the photos would suggest that everyone has memories and those memories are stored in a persons head. So the skull filled with photos would suggest that people experience things, see things, do different things and take photos but the photos are a flash of the memory, the image itself stays in your head.
• A close up of an eye with a picture of us both in the eye ball
This would be slightly abstract. Just a simple eye and in that eye would be a picture, probably one from the video itself to link with the theme. this would suggest that once you look at a person, that image is in your head and the eyes are a main thing that identifies a memory.
• An extreme close up of a girl with a picture in both eyes of Tom
This is similar to the one above apart from their would be two pictures, and they would suggest to the audience the theme of love and relationships which links with the video.
• A boy with a picture stuck to his head, a blank picture representing photographs take a still image but not the entire memory.
this is pretty self explanitory. the empty image shows that a picture isnt for life, the memory is.
• A selection of blurry, faded, blank photographs
this is a similar reference to the one above
•A simple background, either trees, clouds or a wall, with the title and song, or a picture of the artist.

Artist Name Ideas.

The title of my song is photobooth.
The original artist is a band called Friendly Fires.
We have to alter the artists name but were allowed to keep the song. I have thought of a numerous amount of new artist/band names.
In my music video, images of a boy and a girl are shown, a boy playing a guitar and another boy dancing. So either of these options could be my band or artist. I have decided to have the boy (Thomas Townsend) whos is acting allongside myself in the music video to be on the poster and the cd cover for my digipack and anxillary texts as he fits the criteria i am trying to portray more than the others, and i believe is more photogenic. also the boy playing the guitar is the band member so i dont want him advertising the new single.
potential names:
Tommy T- Tommy Townsend (Tommy T)

Strings attatched- as i feel this links with the idea that the instrunment seen played in the video is a guitar therefore strings are what consists in a guitar. Also the idea of relationships starting andd ending in the video, and the theme memories, this links with the title because i feel when a relationship begins or ends you still have strings attached to that person. It comes from the cliche metaphor, 'strings attached.'

The Morning After- the band specialises in teenage lifestyles, and the idea of going out the night before and getting drunk then realising the morning after what you did. this would target the audience i feel.

I have decided on strings attactched as Strings attacthed-(the idea that two lovers are drawn appart from each other, sharing memories then being seperated)

PLAN! shooting scedule

I am going to plan my shooting schedule in order of months. I plan to complete my planning through September, October, November and December then start filming in January. In January i am going to experiment with camera techniques in order to get the exact footage i want. I am going to also film bits of footage so i have a variety to choose from when i begin my editing. In February I am going to film Tom and myself doing things such as play fighting, arguing, fighting, laughing, walking, shopping, eating and going to different venus like the park or the cinema. This going to show the relationship idea. I am going to take lots of shots from all different angles so i have more to work with. I am also going to film both Jack and Niall doing their peformance. I am going to film 10 minutes of Jack dancing, starting off slow then gadually increasing to fast as this will make the editing more fun to play around with and i can cut bits to fit in with the different tempo's in the song. I am going to film Niall sat down playing his guitar, stood up and other different styles, this will also come in usefull when i want him to be seen in diferent ways when i begin to edit. In March i am going to have filmed all my footage by following my storyboard and screenplay. I am going to then convert all my footage on the edditing suite and begin editing. In April i am going to have had my clips and music in place, then i am going to work with different cuts, fadings, lighting effects and the rest of my editing. Then i will hopefully have a few weeks to tweak an bits i have or havent completed.

Order Of Shots

• An introduction of Thomas- a close up to introduce him as a character, looking straight at the camera.
• An introduction of Emily
• The two together laughing and talking, filming themselves
• Thomas talking to Emily, playing
• Emily shouting at Thomas, then laughing and cuddling
• The couple realistically arguing
• The couple realistically making up
• Thomas lifting Emily up
• Niall playing his guitar-mcu
• Emily laughing and talking
• Emily on a swing in the park- ls
• Emily on the swing- mcu
• Emily on a swing- cu
• Thomas on a swing-ls
• Thomas on a swing-mcu
• Thomas on a swing-cu
• Jack dancing -ms
• Niall playing his guitar-ha
• The two laughing again
• Thomas walking away
• Emily walking away
• The two kissing and hugging
• Thomas looking through a photo album
• Emily looking through a photo album
• The two looking happy (past tense)

When the pre-chorus starts Jack is going to be dancing as the beat changes significantly and his dancing goes in time with that specific beat. When the chorus begins Niall will start playing his guitar and each time we see both of these the camera angles will change and te back drop so their never the same and looks as though their travelling for example:
Jack will first be seen in a bedroom, then in te street, then in a pub dancing.

Props, Location, Cast, Costume

PROPS

• A handheld video recorder-to be used when the couple are recording themselves, the video recorder is going to be handheld to create a home video effect, and it may be seen in some of the clips, when the video is been touched and passed about.

•The guitar the Niall uses whilst performing to show realism

I am going to use a minimum of props to show realism, and a naturalistic effect. I want the video to look un-prepared and not set up, as it is supposed to be a home made video of the couple. The shots are going to be mainly physical and contact between the two rather than using objects to come between the two people.

LOCATION

• College-the smoking area- surrounded by trees, benches and grass for both Thomas and Emily to play and run around on.
• A nearby street near college- to show movement and every day life activities.
• The park- so the couple can use the swings and slide for different scenery and game playing to show fun.
•Then a backdrop with a location on to show un-naturalism for both Niall and Jack

CAST

• Thomas Townsend and Emily Potter (myself)
•Niall Ransome to portray the singer with his guitar, i chose Niall because he plays the guitar anyways so he would be able to play an actual song so it would look to fake.
•Jack Waller to portray a random dancer, i chose Jack but he isn’t shy and would dance crazily in front of the camera and that’s they type of image i wanted.

COSTUME

• Both wearing every day typical teenage clothing of the 2010 century all the way through.
• A different change of clothing for the photo album scene and slightly different image to show time passing.
•Jack wearing every day clothes- jeans and a tshirt to show realism and as the background is going to be different i think enough will be shown through the background and jack dancing without using anything to elaborate.
•Niall wil be wearing every day clothing too to show realism
•They will all be wearing the same costumes throughout to show continuity and as though the clips been shot in one day.

Basic Outline Of My Music Video - Plan

My video is going to consist of a boy (Thomas Townsend) and myself. I am going to be filming the shots of Thomas, and Jonny Kelly, a fellow media student, is going to be filming the shots of me Thomas and me together.

• The video is going to be based on:
• A young couple in a relationship, enjoying happy times together.
• Both are reminiscing of memories they had together
• their is going to be an argument, to show the bad times as well as the good times
• Photograph clips
• Both, separately flicking through a photo album, looking at their past.

The video is going to be predominately in black and white and sepia to show the past tense and history, also to represent old fashioned films and photographs as the theme is memories. I am going to use the slow motion and fast forward technique to show the variety of pace and the ups and downs in the relationship. I am going to change colour effects to interpret that the filming was set in the summer, to create enjoyable times. I a going to experiment using different camer techniques, varying the angles. I want to use low angles ooking up at the characters to show their statuses when their happy and enjoying themselves, and high angles when they are not soo happy. I want most of the clips to be close ups to really establish their expressions and emotions towards one another.

To make the video not boring i am also going to film a male to represent the main singer in the band. He is going to be playing a guitar by himself. I am going to film him behind a backdrop and replace the backdrop with another picture, possibly a brick wall or something more extreme like passing traffic or feilds. This is just going to take the focus away from the narrative aspect of the couple together, and make the video denotation as it isa mixture of a narrative and perfomace. These clips are going to be repeated throughout the video to create a degree of authenticity. The clips are going to be off the Boy (Niall Ransome) playing his guitar from all different angles, high, low, close up and medium shots, this is going to involve the audience and also make it more enjoyable to watch.

I am also going to include Jack Waller. He is going to also take the spectators eye away from the star performing and the couples storyline, he is going to be dancing randomley. This is going to show disjuncture as it is totally irrelevent to the rest of the video. He is going to be dancing to the beat to show continuity. He is also going to be infront of the a back drop which i am going to change the picture of to busy traffic to show the unusaul aspect and give the effect of him dancing in betwen traffic.
